X-ATI Guy is alive and well

Sorry kids, the blogging has been pathetic lately. I struggle with guilt - "maybe I shouldn't write about Gothard"- and then I rise above it - only to plummet when I get an angry email from an ATI mother.

Still fight the tendencies. Yesterday I made a commitment to make no more commitments.

Sheesh.

But hey -- I just joined Twitter, so maybe that'll help! Social media is kinda like a Gothard program . . . there's always a new one around the corner to get us excited.

I think I'll start an approved social network called "LookatmyFacebutnotmybodyBook". Many old Alert drill instructors will be the moderators of it and any post will have to be approved by the old governing board of Character Link. I think it will take off and spread to the world

you know, i was in a cult - not ATI, not even born-again christian - but i recognize so much in reading your blog, and i love it. i also think it's a really healthy outlet for "deprogramming". besides which, you have a great sense of humor. and you never know when a former groupie will be discovering the world and stumble upon your blog.

I just found your site. I appreciate you. It's been about 30 years since I attended the Gothard seminar. I'm still dealing with it and the legalistic culture it spawned. I'm glad God is so gracious.

Wow...I wish this site was around seventeen years ago when I was trying to make some sense of the ridiculous crap dished out by B.G. and his storm troopers at ATIA, lol. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Also, to the person who had to watch their Cabbage Patch doll burn...me, too! It was quite disturbing...

Please dont stop posting ... I know you mentioned before that you feel as if maybe this site provided the catharsis you needed and maybe you were "done" - there are a lot of people out there who are not done and still need this site!

Dear Xer,

I just discovered your site and have become completely obsessed with it. I didn't grow up in ATI, but my husband was home-schooled in a similar mindset and I am the daughter of a fundamentalist pastor to Jesus-hippies. Even though my experiences were SOOO different, I find all the Christianese lingo, etc., HILARIOUS. Plus, the stuff on women that's coming down from Gothard is totally evil and oppressive, so it's not wrong to rip him up a bit.

Give us more!

grateful for your posts. it is great "deprogramming" for me too, a victim of the IBLP brainwashing. helps to refresh my memory of all the CRAP i was taught! an ati person really doesn't understand until they're out of it and looking back!

Hey, X-ATI Guy, don't be discouraged. A lot of us really appreciate the site, and this can be a part of the healing process for a lot of people. If one person leaves the cult because of it, it's worth it. Keep up the good work!

I have been in ATI before, and like you said, it is really not loving, but legalistic and judgmental. The program has an undue concern for your externals (i.e. your clothing, facial hair, etcetera).

However, we should not forget that Jesus strongly condemned the religious hypocrisy of the Pharisees as evident in Matthew 23.

Also, Bill Gothard and his "institute" is also discussed on a Facebook Group called Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) Cult Survivors (and Their Supporters).

I would ask one particular question to ask about ATI/IBLP and IFB. Does there seem to be a correlation between these?

So, I guess I will tell my story... I never have before, not even to other ATIA survivors that I know now. Some of us see each other every so often and it is awkward. I think we are both wondering if it was as bad for one another as it was for us. I was in an ATIA homeschooling group in Northern California... Still a little scared to write this and it was 15 years ago. I knew it was a cult at the time, but didn't know really what a cult was until I took a psychology class in college. The time in this cult was the worst time in my life. At 14 I decided I would either kill myself or leave home. I left. Child abuse was encouraged, mind control was used. We were starved and forced to work all day. Some families were better than mine and some were worse. I was not subjected to sexual abuse that I think some other kids were. Families in the ATIA group had to home school their children, have bible study every day, women stayed home and had as many children as possible, fasting every Tuesday, education consisted of more bible study and chores, the girls and boys were not allowed to play together and the girls had to always wear skirts, long hair an no makeup, men were treated like gods and were doted on. Everything was so controlled. No outside influences were allowed like tv, radio, magazines, some toys were burned and others were sent to China. We looked and acted like abused children, people had to know... we were beaten almost daily with a belt and treated like slaves, but we sure learned those character traits!!!!!
